Elag confirmed our thought

Category : News

On 4th-7th June 2018 we attended the ELAG 2018 International Conference at the National Technical Library. It was devoted to the data – the sources of knowledge, and what could be acquired from it. It is mainly knowledge, that can help us greatly in our work, and so we can provide users with better quality services in more effective way.

The first day was devoted to workshops – the participants had the opportunity to try different technologies and procedures used by colleagues from abroad to solve problems that we have encountered in our country. During the conference, we listened to very interesting contributions and discussions – colleagues dealt with issues of the effective integration of different sources of knowledge and related services so that the library continued being a single source of access to knowledge. We made sure that the development of the ARL platform went in the right direction – our users have been having access to different resources and services from one place, even from any mobile device. The central theme, therefore, was technology, that has been constantly shifting, and has changed the work of librarians very radically. Again, it was confirmed, that continuing education focusing on technologies and possibilities of their effective use in our work was extremely important, and we will have to pay much more attention to it.

At the end of May, the 24th INFORUM conference on electronic information resources and their professional use in science, research, education and entrepreneurship took place in Prague. During its existence, it hosted a number of important lecturers. One of them is our executive Ing. Nadežda Andrejčíková, Ph.D. Her this year’s contribution, thirteenth in total, attracted many viewers. Then she was included in the “Hall of Fame” among other lecturers and moderators who attended the conference most of the time.

As the title of her presentation “The user is always at least the first” indikated, she focused on the current importance of library-information systems in libraries, the behavior of users in relation to their needs and the offer of libraries, etc. She highlighted the importance of electronic information resources, electronic documents and electronic servises, and emphasized the importance of developing and implementing information systems not separately, but in one platform, as a set of technologies, tools, resources, applications and services integrated together into one complex.

The security of library documents is no longer to be feared in the Olomouc Library. Our staff installed new advanced RFID-enabled devices there at the end of January. The library buildings were secured almost from the cellar to the attic – in three departments there have been installed security gates that sense the movement of media and people. Even a PREMIUM version was used once, which is able to protect an extra wide passage.
